Snow not slowing construction projects near Regina

Saskatchewan has been given its first taste of winter.

Many people woke up to a white blanket as snow fell throughout Wednesday.

This first sign of winter doesn’t put a stop to the ongoing highway and road construction throughout the province.

In many cases, in particular the Regina bypass project, the road markers remain in place, regardless if snow is falling.

“Those pylons and the glow posts and the barrels, they get moved, they get knocked over pretty much constantly so crews are always going out and setting those back up again,” said Doug Wakabayashi with the Ministry of Highways.

Construction will continue until 2019 in the case of the bypass so those operating snow plows and sand and salt trucks have to be aware and maneuver around the obstacles.

“Their priority will be treating the driving lanes and as soon as they are able to. They will be going back out to make sure all those sorts of things are set back up properly again,” Waabayashi said.

“To the extent we can, we set up our traffic control to accommodate the largest loads that are traveling on the roads.”

That includes the wide blades on the front of the snow plows.
