Despite rain, farmers make progress in harvest

Despite rain on the weekend, Farmers were able to make progress with harvest.

The latest crop report stated 70 per cent of the 2016 crop is combined and 22 per cent is swathed or ready to straight-cut.

The five year average for this time of year is 79 per cent combined.

Harvest is furthest advanced in the southwest part of the province where producers have 79 per cent of their crop in the bin.

Across the rest of the province, 77 per cent of crop is combined in the southeast, 61 per cent in the east-central, 65 per cent in the west-central and northeastern regions and 64 per cent in the northwest. Some producers in the southern regions have completed harvest.

The report stated rain was general throughout the province. The west-central and northwestern regions received lesser amounts than other regions. Most of the areas that reported rain received at least 25 mm of rain or more. The greatest amount of rain was 63 mm in the Moosomin area.

Ninety-eight per cent of filed peas, 93 per cent of lentils, 68 per cent of durum, 67 per cent of the spring wheat, 61 per cent of canola and 20 per cent of flax has been combined.

The report stated that strong winds blew around some canola swaths resulting in shattering losses and standing water from the recent rain also caused some crop damage.
