Mankota residents are doing their part to help the family whose home was vandalized

The village of Mankota is trying to fix things after a home was vandalized with racial slurs.

Last week, people in the community woke up to find things like “ISIS”, “bomb maker”, and “white people only” painted on a home.

Grant Martin is the village mayor and he said he was horrified when he found out.

“That was a, as far as I’m concerned, that’s a hate crime – it’s intolerable really.”

Martin said many people in the town were angry about what happened. He believes it’s just a small group who perpetrated the act.

Some in the town worked quickly when they found out what happened.

“Some of the citizens decided they didn’t want the kids seeing it on their way to school and they covered (the vandalism) up with tarps and then they painted over it later on after the police left,” said Martin.

A GoFundMe campaign was started the day after by a friend of the family. Grant said on Monday the community has also opened an account and will be raising money to fix the home.

“They want to cover the cost of that and convince these people that Mankota’s a good place, ‘cuz it is.”
