The two people charged with lighting a kitten on fire at the Craven Country Jamboree in July will not be prosecuted further.
Crown attorney Drew Gillespie said the charges had to be stayed because there wasn’t enough evidence to prove the youth and man were guilty.
“The case at hand has a high public interest given that we have a vulnerable injured animal involved, but on the admissible evidence provided, the crown could not prove beyond reasonable doubt who injured the cat or that the cat’s condition was bad enough to put those who possessed it under a legal duty to obtain help for the animal,” Gillespie said.
At this point, there are no others being charged in the crime.
“After reviewing all the evidence, the crown determined that there was no likelihood of determining who caused the injuries to the cat,” Gillespie said.
At the time, TM’z Veterinary Clinic in Lumsden said someone had drenched the kitten in alcohol and was lighting it on fire.
The kitten, who was later named Jamboree, recovered from the injuries.
