Rain across Sask. is affecting harvest in most areas

The recent wet weather across Saskatchewan is having an impact on the progress farmers are attempting to make.

Saskatchewan Agriculture indicates 38 per cent of the crop is combined and 38 per cent is swathed or ready to straight-cut. The five year average for this time of year normally sees 44 per cent of harvest completed at this point in the season. The southeast is the furthest along in harvest with a total of 52 per cent complete.

Sask Ag’s weekly crop report blamed rain for slowing things down over the last seven days. Soggy harvest weather is causing downgrading in crops. Frost was reported in some areas around the northwest part of the province, but Sask Ag believes very little crop damage was actually done. That area is the furthest behind average, having only 17 per cent of the crop in the bin.

Hay land and pasture topsoil moisture is, for the most part, adequate at 86 per cent. A total of 84 per cent of cropland topsoil moisture is also rated as adequate at this time.
