The Regina Humane Society has too many kittens.
Cats are flooding into animal shelters across the province according to Bill Thorn, the director of marketing and public relations for the humane society.
“Because of the early spring people will let their cats roam freely a little bit early this year, which started the breeding cycle a little bit earlier. It’s really allowed for almost an extra breeding cycle this year,” he said.
So far the humane society has had 325 more felines dropped off than during the same time last year. That’s a 21 per cent increase.
Adoption fees for cats have been waived and kittens dropped to $50 starting Thursday.
“It’s one of the other things that we do so we don’t get to a situation where we are too crowded, where it becomes difficult to keep everyone healthy and happy. You get a large number of animals in a small area and, like people, diseases easily spread and it can cause some problems.”
Right now the shelter has 130 kittens and 65 cats needing a forever home.
“There’s been more and more litters of kittens coming in,” he said.
The shelter lowered their adoption rates in anticipation of an increase of cats when the temperature drops.
“When it gets cold all of a sudden, they’ll start bringing them into the shelter. So we anticipate seeing another influx of both cats and kittens in the next month or so when it’s getting into fall,” he said. “We’re doing everything we can try and make room for the cats that we know are coming.”
The lower adoption fees will continue until they’ve stabilized adoption numbers.
