Demolition begins on Park St. Sears building

Demolition has started on the Sears warehouse to make way for a new business park. 

“It’s sad to see Sears leaving after 40 years but the time has come to repurpose the property and maximize its use,” said Glen Hill, vice president and partner of Colliers International Regina.

The iconic Sears warehouse on Park Street is about 90,000 square feet and will be torn down over the next three weeks to a month.

Hungerford Properties out of Vancouver plans to turn the property into an industrial park called Titan Business Park.

“This is one of the biggest industrial redevelopments in the history of Regina really,” said Hill.

The rest of the warehouse will be refurbished and be used by a few different businesses.

The plan is to build a road and divide the space into one-acre lots next summer. We don’t yet know which businesses are going to move in.

“We are in discussions with several groups right now but I’m not at liberty to say just yet,” said Hill.

Sears Canada is downsizing and will keep working out of part of the warehouse.

“Sears has been a major focal point of Regina for half a century and I believe just about everybody in the city has a friend or relative who has worked for Sears. It’s sad, but the time has come to turn the page,” said Hill.

At least 95 per cent of the material from the old building will be recycled.
