3 now vying to be next Mayor of Regina

There are now three people vying to be the next mayor of Regina.

Environmental activist Jim Elliott announced his candidacy on Saturday.

Elliott said his campaign will focus on a number of issues ranging from climate change to racism. He feels city council needs to be more responsive to residents.

“We tend to see the public going and talking to the council, but no noticeable response or no acknowledgement of the problems.”

Elliot explained the city needs to be more responsive to climate change and suggests some policy changes.

“I think the clear obvious ones is to get away from our car culture and the idea of supporting active transportation cycling, transit, paratransit, so we get ourselves out of the car.”

Elliott added he feels the city needs to acknowledge there is a problem with racism in Regina saying “the current council is not identifying that as a problem we need to deal with.”

He stated he would like to see changes to certain policies around policing, as well as housing to help solve issues involving racism.

Current mayor Michael Fougere and Tony Fiacco are also running for the position in the upcoming municipal election on Oct. 26.

A recent poll has Fougere with a big lead in the race.
