Funnel clouds possible for parts of Sask.

Thunderstorms and possible funnel clouds are on the menu for west-central Saskatchewan Tuesday afternoon.

A special weather statement put out by Environment Canada on Tuesday said conditions would be favourable for funnel clouds. The statement was for the Battlefords, Swift Current, Moose Jaw, Martensville, Leader, Kindersley, and Saskatoon areas.

“People will have noticed that the temperature has changed quite a bit from the high 20s, low 30s. The temperature has changed quite a bit and that’s ushering in some more unstable air,” said Terri Lang, a meteorologist with Environment Canada.

She said it’s the low-pressure system coming in over the province that’s causing it. The funnel clouds can be produced by weak rotation under rapidly growing clouds or weak thunderstorms.

Lang said the funnel clouds from this type of storm are often very small.

“The vast majority of them don’t touch down, but some of them can touch down – and when they do, they can do damage. So we just want people to be sort of on the look-out for that but not to be really alarmed when they see funnel clouds.”

On Tuesday afternoon, some severe thunderstorm warnings were issued as well – for the Hudson Bay, Kamsack, and Melfort areas.
