BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil — There will be no shot at Olympic gold for Canada’s women’s soccer team.
Second-ranked Germany defeated No. 10 Canada 2-0 in the semifinals today in Belo Horizonte.
The loss ended Canada’s four-game winning streak at the Olympic tournament.
Melanie Behringer and Sara Daebritz scored for the Germans, who will play No. 6 Sweden for gold at the storied Maracana in Rio.
The Swedes defeated No. 8 Brazil on penalties in the other semifinal.
Germany has a chance at an Olymic soccer double with the men facing Nigeria in Wednesday’s semifinal.
Canada will face the Olympic hosts earlier Friday in Sau Paulo for bronze.
The two teams know each other well, splitting a two-game exhibition series in Canada prior to the Games.
Canada won the bronze medal four years ago in London.
