One of the biggest challenges faces this year’s Olympic athletes is whether or not they’ll even attend.
Prominent athletes such as golfers Rory McIlroy and Jason Day, and NBA Star Pau Gasol, have all said they aren’t going to the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil due to the threat of Zika Virus.
But Saskatoon volleyball star Gavin Schmitt said he won’t be one of them.
“There are always big things going on about the Olympics,” he said.
“Everybody makes huge deals out of small things.”
Schmidtt said he knows about the dangers in Brazil, having been to the country before for FIVB World Volleyball play.
“I’m just not going to leave athlete village,” Schmitt joked. “I’ll probably be in a plastic bubble.”
Canada qualified for the Olympics last month for the first time in 24 years; they’re ranked tenth in the world for volleyball.
