The first long weekend of the summer camping season is here – and a lot of people are taking full advantage.
Some campgrounds – especially those close to Regina and Saskatoon are quite busy with eager campers gobbling up the spots. Mary Ann Wihak is with Sask Parks. She says provincial parks close to Regina and Saskatoon are heavily booked for the weekend.
“Echo valley is expecting a very high turn-out, as are Buffalo Pound, Pike Lake, Blackstrap, Douglas and Danielson are all around the 90 per cent mark.”
Even with the long weekend rush, there are still lots of campsites available. Wihak says other parks like Rowan’s Ravine, Moose Mountain and Duck Mountain have plenty of open spots. They were all booked at around 50 per cent capacity as of Friday afternoon.
She also says you can check ahead and pick a campsite before leaving home. You can go to www.saskparks.net to check for available sites at the park of your choice
Fire bans in place for parts of Saskatchewan
If your plans include having a bonfire or campfire this May Long weekend, the province is reminding you about extremely dry conditions throughout Saskatchewan.
“We want to make sure people are checking with their municipality before they do any burning. If they’re camping or having family over and want to have a bonfire, they should be checking with their municipality to ensure that they’re not adding risk to the current situation,” said Duane McKay with government relations.
