U of S Huskies beat Carleton in longest hockey game ever at CIS University Cup

What a crazy start for the University of Saskatchewan Huskies men’s hockey team at the CIS University Cup in Halifax.

In a new single game elimination format they took on the Carleton Ravens with a spot in the semi-finals on the line.

They battled to a 2-2 tie after regulation, so off to overtime they went.  They would go on to play a second overtime, a third overtime and finally a fourth overtime before the Huskies Parker Thomas won it at 6:11 of the fourth overtime ending the longest game ever in University Cup history.

“I talked to my centre-man before the draw, and told him I was going to drive to the net,” Thomas said in a release.  “I got stopped on the first one, but I was able to put the rebound home. I don’t remember much after that (laughing).”

Jordan Cooke, the CIS goaltender of the year, stopped 58 shots in the win.

“That’s his job,” Adolph said, tongue-in-cheek, when asked about Cooke’s performance.

“He has been doing it all year for us.”

Levi Kable and Kohl Bauml had the other Huskies goals.

So the Huskies move on to Saturday’s semi-final taking on the St.FX X-Men.

Huskies women’s basketball team also wins.

The Huskies women’s basketball team is also off to the semi-finals at their CIS national championship.

A dominant fourth quarter help them beat the Ottawa Gee-Gees 73-62.  The Huskies outscored Ottawa 25-13 in that fourth quarter.

5th year forward Dalyce Emerson led the way with 25 points and 17 rebounds.

“We have a lot of experience on our team this year, lots of us have been to national championships,” said Emmerson in a release.  “We just had to settle in on defence. Once we made some adjustments down there we were able to pull away on the offensive end.”

The Huskies will face the Saint Mary’s Huskies in Saturday’s semi-final.
