Two local restaurants in Regina are launching a fundraising initiative in the hopes of helping people with living with AIDS in Saskatchewan.
The event coincides with upcoming World AIDS Day, December 1.
In Saskatchewan, new infection rates are double the national average. In 2013 the number was about 130 new cases.
There are a number of factors to Saskatchewan’s infection rates.
Doctor Alex Wong, Infectious Diseases physician at the Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region, says the disease doesn’t discriminate, but does leave certain people vulnerable.
“Unfortunately it does disproportionately affect those who struggle with access to care, poverty and housing.”
The fundraiser is being launched by two Regina restaurants, La Bodega and Shannon’s Pub and Grill. Tent cards on tables will explain the initiative to customers and the restaurant will make a donation to AIDS Programs South Saskatchewan (APSS) for each meal sold.
It is hoped more restaurants will jump on board.
APSS Executive Director, Brian Wiens says the money is put to good use.
“HIV affects all of our communities and anything we can do to raise awareness and help to keep this issue in front of everyone in the province is most welcome.”
