A security video showing a City of Saskatoon garbage truck destroying a back alley trash bin has racked up tens of thousands of views online, and prompted a response from city hall.
The video was uploaded on July 11 to the Youtube account Crayon324. The description reads: “Can someone please explain how workers for the city do things like this and get away with it.”
From a camera facing the back alley, a city garbage truck is seen emptying a series of cans. After placing one back down, the arm on the truck appears to stall, then come down repeatedly on the black bin, crushing it.
The truck then drives away.
The city has responded to several requests for clarification on twitter, calling the incident an “arm malfunction.” They also said the bin will be replaced and that the homeowner has been contacted, and a follow-up with the truck operator is underway.
A twitter user with the same Crayon324 handle challenged the city about the incident, tweeting “this is clearly NOT a malfunctioning arm but a deliberate act. Properly investigate.”
