Standing Buffalo First Nation sets curfew for kids

Kids on the Standing Buffalo First Nation will now have to stay inside at night, thanks to a curfew.
 
A notice from the band, posted to Standing Buffalo’s Facebook page, stated the curfew applies to people 16 years of age and under from 9 p.m. to 8 a.m.
 
It stated that it was due to concerns for the kids’ safety; kids have been spotted walking along the highway, during the day and at night, without adult supervision. The post also indicated that there have been reports of strangers trying to pick up children.
 
“We are very concerned for their safety due to cases of Missing People. We care about our children and don’t want them to become a statistic in such a case.”
 
The notice also stated that diving off of the bridge and swimming in the river would be banned for safety reasons. Diving can be dangerous as the river has a strong current, and sometimes fishermen lose their hooks in the water.
 
Lastly, the note asked parents to be aware of where their kids are and to talk to them about respecting public property. There have apparently been some incidents of kids climbing on top of buildings like the school and band office.
 
“There is a danger to them falling off the roofs and this is no place for them to play.”
 
The note ended with a line saying everyone can help keep kids safe by working together. The note posted to the Facebook page was signed by all six band councillors, though not the Chief.
