You've probably seen one or two struggling against the weather this winter, but not in these numbers.

Saskatoon's third annual Ice Cycle event kicked off on Sunday, with workshops and free repairs starting at 11:30 a.m. at the Farmer's Market.

Hundreds of cyclists from around the city geared up at 12:45 p.m. to take to the streets with police escort, for fun and to raise awareness of the feasibility of winter biking.

Event organizer Sean Shaw said although they still had around 200 people turn out the last two years in -40C weather, the balmy Saskatoon temperatures helped out.

"We bill ourselves as the coldest bike parade on earth, and I think we're pushing the boundaries at 0 C, but I think this really pushes people to get out," he said.

"When you're cycling in the winter it's good to wear layers, you do get pretty warm once you start biking."

Shaw said cyclists did not need winter-ready bikes for the day's event, but it's a good idea to equip them with studded tires for everyday ice cycling.

Shaw told News Talk Radio previously that the event is also about raising awareness, as Saskatoon has done a lot to support summer biking, but there is room for improvement in the winter.

"We have some bike lanes and it would be great to see those given some priority when they are cleaning those streets to also clean the bike lanes," he said.

The event finished off with live entertainment just before 2 p.m.
