Football is a brotherhood but for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, they had to tippy-toe around having to split up actual brothers trying out for the team.
The older of the Smith brothers, linebacker Johnathon, was given the bad news he was no longer on the roster as his younger brother, receiver Jamal, remains with the Roughriders, trying to earn a spot on the 2011 roster.
"I spoke with (Jamal) before practice to see how he was doing and he said, 'I'm fine', and he understands the nature of the business and he felt bad for his brother but he also knew he had to come out and not let it affect what he had to do," explained Head Coach Greg Marshall after Tuesday's practice.
Marshall thought the younger, Jamal, had one of his better days in training camp on a tough day for the family.
Roughriders adding and subtracting
The team also released kicker Jake Harfman, who was pushing Eddie Johnson and Chris Milo for the kicking duties this season. The team did have good news for some players. Defensive lineman RJ Roberts was added to the roster along with defensive back Eddie Russ.
Russ was one of the first players released on cut down day but as the pre-season game against Edmonton nears the Roughriders felt they wanted to take a closer look at both Russ and Roberts, while Smith and Harfman were likely not going to see much time.
Marshall did not know any more on the shoulder injury to defensive end Brent Hawkins, Tuesday. He believes Hawkins will see a doctor soon and that they'll know more in the next 24-48 hours.
Aaron Fairooz continues to jog, while recovering from a hamstring injury he suffered in the first hour of training camp. After taking part in yesterday's workouts, rookie defensive back Craig Butler was back on the sidelines along with veteran DB Chris McKenzie.
Jamal Smith's sticking with the team could be due to the fact the Roughriders are starting to lose depth at receiver as Obed Cetoute and Dominic Bolden have joined Fairooz on the injured list.
The Roughriders will have their final practice on Wednesday before Friday's pre-season opener against the Eskimos. (Kickoff at 7:00 at Mosaic Stadium)
