Sandra Schmirler Charity Curling Classic bonspiel cancelled
Women's curling in Saskatchewan will have one less big event in the coming season.
A lack of a title sponsor means the Sandra Schmirler Charity Curling Classic bonspiel will not be run in 2012.
“Last year we ran the event without a title sponsor and unfortunately did not come out in the black, so this year the committee was trying to secure a title sponsor, that did not happen, so felt that at this point it wasn’t in the best interest to run this spiel in a deficit position,” said Amber Holland, one of the event organizers.
“It was a long 16 years, it was a tough decision to take a step back at least for this season … but we’re hopeful we can continue it on in future years.”
The event raises funds to the Dr. Sandra Schmirler charity, to a scholarship that provides students at the University of Regina, the opportunity to pursue studies in the Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies, and in particular, in recreation and sport administration.
Holland says they are trying to find a title sponsor to run the bonspiel again in 2013, but it's a possibility that the bonspiel could be done for good.
“Anytime you lose an event it is going to affect the overall exposure to curing in the community, but in the end of the day you can’t run something that is going to lose money, that’s not good for the sport either,” Holland said.
