The Children’s Discovery Museum could be the next tenant in the Mendel Art Gallery Building.

The City of Saskatoon announced a memorandum of understanding today with the Children's Discovery Museum which is currently located at the Market Mall. It means the city supports them moving into the Mendel once the new Remai Art Gallery opens on River Landing.

Cary Humphrey with the city said this will allow the museum to develop a business plan.

“The Children’s Discovery Museum really was the best fit for this location, the display area and the program area for a children’s museum is very similar to what you would find in an art gallery,” Humphrey explained.

The children’s museum president, Dr. Erica Bird agreed that the art gallery building is the perfect size.

“Basically it’s a place where children learn through playing,” she described the purpose of the children's museum. “Everything is very interactive – sort of similar to a science centre.”

The next step is for city council to approve this memorandum of understanding on Monday.

The city will continue to operate and own the greenhouse attached to the gallery.
