The Saskatchewan Roughriders released one quarterback and added another on Monday.
The team released Jacob Huseman from Tennessee-Chattanooga. Huseman signed with the Riders just over a week ago.
“We’re not gonna bash a guy that we’ve cut already, but it comes down to execution,” Riders VP of football operations, general manager and head coach Chris Jones said about the decision.
The Riders added quarterback Phillip Sims; a 6’4″ 220 lb pivot from Chesapeake, Virginia.
Sims has played at three different universities; after starting his college career at the University of Alabama in 2010, he then went to Virginia before joining the Winston-Salem State Rams in 2013.
He’s also spent time with two NFL organizations, the Seattle Seahawks and the Arizona Cardinals.
Jones said he spoke with Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians about Sims last week.
“Bruce said he’s very intelligent, he’s got a live arm. That’s saying something because Bruce doesn’t compliment anybody,” he said.
Jones said the battle for the number two quarterback spot is still wide open.
“Most people say, ‘He went to three universities and that’s a negative.’ The positives are, I know how to adjust,” Sims said after his first practice with the team on Monday.
Sims said he’s still adjusting to the Canadian game after his first practice on a CFL-size field.
“I had to stop my self a couple of times and say, ‘Calm down, relax, slow down.’ When things starting speeding up around you,
you start speeding up and as a quarterback, you can’t do that.” he said.
Saskatchewan also signed international offensive lineman Marcus Hall from Ohio State and international receiver Devrin Young from Tennessee.
The Riders released international receivers Marcus Young and Alec Lemon and national linebacker Marvin Golding on Monday.
