A video showing thousands of tent caterpillars crawling up the walls and all over the back deck of a family’s home near Saskatoon has gone viral.
By Tuesday night the video posted on Tammi Hanowski’s Facebook page had more than 75,000 views and counting.
Hanowski told 650 CKOM she never expected to see so many caterpillars at her home.
“Last weekend there was maybe, you know, a few crawling on the deck but nothing major,” she said. “Then about Wednesday all of a sudden they were everywhere.”
Hanowski said her family moved to their acreage, located about ten minutes south of Saskatoon, a year-and-a-half ago.
She said last year they dealt with a lot of ticks, but this year’s caterpillars are even worse.
“No matter what we do, we have sprayed them and killed them and vacuumed them up, but they just keep coming back,” she said.
People have been posting tips on dealing with the caterpillars in the comments since the video was posted Monday.
“Everyone posting the same things: use your vegetable oil, use vinegar, malathion, use Ambush — we’ve done it all,” Hanowski said.
She told 650 CKOM she’s trying to find a company that will come out and spray them.
Aerial spraying isn’t an option because she was told the area is classified as “estate acreages” and they’re too close to Camp Dundurn.
For now, the family is waiting it out inside.
Hanowski said the caterpillars have started to take over the barn and garage doors, and they’ve had to cover their pool to try to keep the bugs out.
